Our Mission

To provide classical instruction in the Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu style of traditional Japanese Karate; as well as guidance on the ethical use of karate in every day life.

About Our Karate Style

The roots of traditional Karate lay deep in the history and culture of Asia.  Its more recent origins can be traced from the island of Okinawa to Japan, where it became systematized for modern use.  The art of Karate now has millions of practitioners worldwide.

While Karate is a highly effective means of self-defense, its unique benefits lie in its balanced approach to both physical and mental development.  Karate training provides a solid foundation for the development of character, ethics and strength.

About Sensei Michael O'Donnell

Sensei Michael O'Donnell is the owner of Magnolia Fitness and Sensei (teacher) of Karate.  He has trained in Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu for over thirty years.  He spent ten years directly under the tutelage of the late Soke (Grand Master) Teruo Hayashi in Osaka, Japan.

  • All Japan Championships

  • Osaka City Championships

  • Osaka Prefecture Championships

  • West Coast AAU-Sanctioned Championships

While in Osaka, Sensei O'Donnell taught in a private secondary school that specialized in sports training.  He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in political science.  He now lives in his native Magnolia.

About Our Classes

4 & 5 Year-Old Class:

Success is the theme of our 4-5 year-old class.  Balancing fun with lessons and rules is the key to a great learning environment.  Your child will learn the basics of karate while also improving their ability to take and implement instruction from their teachers.  A positive self-image and effective ways of dealing with safety are the foundations of Karate for children this age.  There are expectations and each child gets to experience the thrill of success and accomplishment.  Please feel free to come to a class and watch the growth that takes place with and inside the kids as they learn the traditional art of karate.

6-12 Year-Old Class:

Focus, discipline and standards are the cornerstones to this phase of learning.  The rank system shows clear achievement and with that the pride of ownership of a job well done.  The classes are vibrant, the goals are clear, and instruction outstanding.  These traditional methods of teaching are challenging, yet the goals are accessible.  Learning the physical art of karate is only part of the formula.  The kids learn about responsibility, accountability and develop skills that will last through middle school, high school, college and their entire lives.  Your child is likely going to see a friend at the dojo (the training hall) and will make new friends as well.

Important Information

  • No Contracts: The Magnolia Fitness enrollment structure is unique from other dojos in that you are not required to sign a contractual agreement for participation. Our training program stresses that courtesy, respect and responsibility are essential to successful human relations. Keeping tuition/membership current and making a commitment to training are intrinsic qualities of our students and families with or without a contract.

  • Tuition Calculation: Tuition is calculated for the entire year and is broken up to spread out the costs evenly across 12 months of instruction taking into account several factors such as type of classes, age, number of days of instruction, holidays, winter, spring and summer breaks, planned absences and a couple of unplanned absences. Payments are due quarterly to provide the dojo and the students with predictable schedules, class participation and financial planning.

  • Registration Fees: There is a one-time registration fee of $95 that is good for the length of your membership with Magnolia Fitness. That said, if you skip one or more quarters your length of membership is broken and you must pay a new registration fee to enroll for a new quarter. For example, if you skip summer quarter and don't pre-pay for September then you forfeit your space in the fall class.

  • Tuition Payments: Tuition is paid quarterly (Jan 1, Apr 1, July 1 & Oct 1). Payments are due by or on the 1st day of the quarter.

  • Family Tuition Discount: We encourage family participation! Parents who train with their children can provide them with visible role models of integrity, work ethics and discipline. A 20% tuition discount is applied to the second family member.

  • Missed Classes: Missed classes due to illness or scheduling conflicts are not uncommon. Students can make up class time by practicing extra at home as well as making arrangements with Sensei to drop in to another class when space is available.

  • Safety Equipment: Required safety equipment for sparring is separate from tuition. You can purchase your equipment from the dojo or via Kensho International (www.kenshoint.com)

  • Promotion Fees: Promotion fees are based on belt ranking; email or call us to receive a breakdown of our promotion fees. Promotions are based on skill level, attendance and attitude in class.

  • Tournaments and Fees: Tournament participation is voluntary. All fees and paperwork associated with tournaments are the responsibility of the participants and/or their family. The tournament registration forms include payment information, rules of the tournament, etc.

  • Photography: Use of photos and/or other digital reproductions of students or their physical likeness may be used to share our experiences with friends, family, community bulletin board, website, handbook or the like whether electronic, print, digital or electronic publishing via the Internet. No names or personal identification will be used with photography. Please let Sensei know if you want to be excluded.

  • Community Service: Scholarships to Magnolia Fitness are occassionally available on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us if you or someone you know may qualify.

“On our third year here and love the progress our child is making. Sensei Mike is professional, serious but also fun. He makes the kids laugh, but moves right on to business. Really, really awesome. A good deal too. Especially for the confidence your child will gain. Can't put a price on that.”

“We recommend Magnolia Fitness to kids and adults. The karate instruction is awesome.”

“I have had the opportunity to attend Sensei Michael's seminars. He does a great job working with kids to adults. A very skilled practitioner who knows how to communicate the technical aspects of the art. And is just an all around great guy!”
